Hayden Brink, Board Chair

“I was brought to Sun Valley from a LinkedIn post by the Social Venture Partnership (SVP) advertising for a board position. Once I met Kris and many of the kids that attended the center, I knew this was an organization truly making a difference for kids in a tough area. I knew I wanted to be a part of it! I have a lot of experience in finance through my career as an investor and investment banking analyst, which has helped inform my work on the board.”

Nazrawit Medhanie, Vice Chair

“SVYC’s focus on youth development in a Denver community that otherwise would not receive adequate, quality programming and activities resonated with me. I believe empowering youth to be the best version of themselves is not only beneficial to them personally, but also to their families, the greater community, and society at large. For that reason alone, SVYC plays an important and transformational role in the lives of youth; unlocking their talents, interests, and potential to achieve success in life. My service on the SVYC board allows me to leverage my skills and experiences from human services, relationship building, and community engagement to serve the mission of SVYC. I also have a backgrond and skills in project management and performance monitoring that inform my board service.”

Jacob Rey, Secretary

“I first came to Sun Valley during a service trip to Denver, in which my team and I participated in in the after school program and spent a weekend with the Sun Valley youth in Estes Park. During that trip, I learned the impact that SVYC has on the community. After moving to Denver, I continued to invest in the center and the Sun Valley community. I now have the pleasure of using my legal background to help further SVYC’s mission to empower youth, families, and community for greater success.”

Cindy Rubino, Treasurer

Andrea Smith

“I first learned of Sun Valley through an acquaintance who was passionate about the organization’s mission. As I learned more about the resources and sense of community SVYC provides these young people, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. Exposure to a variety of activities, and particularly experiences that incorporate teamwork and collaboration, are key to the development of well-rounded young people. SVYC’s programs help ensure residents have access to these opportunities for their future. My goal at SVYC is to utilize my nearly 20 years of experience in marketing communications, media relations, community relations, event promotion, atheletic administration, strategic planning, and public education to advance the organization’s mission.”

Sun Valley Youth Center has been a Christian voice of God’s love to the neighborhood for 20 years, impacting the lives of the local children and their families. I was attracted to supporting this ongoing work, and I was very interested in serving somewhere near my own neighborhood. I also have a lot of multi-cultural experience and speak Spanish so I was looking for a setting where I could use this experience, even if indirectly. I have years of experience in nonprofit work, program management, and grant making which adds value to my role as a board member.

I came to the Sun Valley Youth Center because they were short staffed and asked if I could temporarily help out. I hesitantly said yes being I had no prior experience working with children and no intention to, either. I planned to be there for only three short months but after those three months, I could not leave. I fell in love with the Youth Center, the mission, the community, and the smile of each child I met and grew to know. I fell in love with the little moments where I found myself laughing with the children over the silliest things. I fell in love with the moments when I held a crying child and helped them regulate themselves and show me that smile again. I fell in love with moments I taught a child a self-regulating technique and watched them teach it to others. I fell in love with the moments I was being chased by a child in a game of tag and we were laughing so hard we could hardly run. I fell in love with the moments I bonded with a child over a simple game of catch. I fell in love with the moments a child taught me something new. I came to the Sun Valley Youth Center thinking I would change the lives of these children but, more than anything, they have changed mine.
