At this point in the year, we have about 15 students, under the age of 13, who participate in Karate and MMA each week. Doing Karate and MMA with a trained Sensei has been a positive experience for the children, because not only do they learn new self-defense skills, but they also practice deep breathing, stretching, and focusing through multiple movements.
One of our younger elementary students has begun to be more consistent in his participation and even when he is having a hard time focusing during other parts of the day, when Sensei is giving directions, he gives his full attention to the class. Additionally, on his list of calming techniques, he includes using the punching bag, which is a good outlet for him to get out frustration. Karate has become an important part of our students’ lives and we look forward to them beginning belt tests soon.
